Howards Race
by David Solomon
How and why John Howard won the extraordinary 2001 federal election is the subject of this in-depth examination by six of Australia's leading journalists.
They detail the way political fortunes swung wildly from one party to the other throughout the year, and the impact of the crucial arrival of the Tampa off Christmas Island
The book looks at the careers of John Howard and Kim Beazley, and sets the scene for the election contest. It explores and explains three key policy areas- GST, 'border protection' and September 11- and reports on the campaigns conducted by Liberal, Labour, the Nationals, the Greens and One Nation, as well as some high profile Independents.
This collection concludes by taking a look at the Senate and reviewing the nature of the 'race' election- an election that allowed the Howard government to be elected for a third time.
